It is a shame that dell listened to people about quiet fans early on.

Unfortunately the dell xps 13 also has a very low end graphics card i m not sure if this is actually the source of the problem but i suspect it to be. The dell fan controller that i hear is not adjustable is simply not acting as quick as needed. Works like a charm even though the temperature limits may need some tweaks. Solved by removing killer wireless software and driver version 12 0 0 825 and using the driver version automatically installed by windows and updates version 12 0 0 820.

Also click the system link to update your bios. This results in windows s default configuration being high res but scaled up by 300. When fan control is disabled use i8kmon daemon to control the fan.

I also noticed the battery draining faster. I bought a new dell xps 13 2 in 1 7390 laptop i7 processor and on non demanding tasks it would become hot and the fans would turn on. The source of the problem is that the new dell xps 13 has a very high res but small screen. It errs on the side of slow quiet fans instead of proper thermal control.

This should disable the bios fan control until the machine is rebooted. This is nothing permanent a reboot restores the setting also it is possible to re enable bios fan control with sudo smm 31a3.
